Against gay marriage?

January 7, 2009 - 4:27 am
  • can someone please explain to me in detail exactly what is wrong with gay marriage? please dont give me the "its just wrong" or "its just gross" thing. please can someone give me a rational reason why gay people should be denied this right?

  • theres nothing wrong with it

  • It is the church. Until people can think for themselves they will promote whatever their church dictates.

  • There are no rational reasons. Its all based on personal animus and the "ick factor", disguised behind religious rationalization (ie: "G-d made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve") .

Contrary to what some people think, it does not "clearly" state anything about homosexuality in the Bible, that's just YOUR church's interpretation of their favorite MIS-translation of the original ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts, which contain words and concepts that even experienced Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek scholars can't always agree on how to translate accurately.

Basically, narrowminded straight people make up their minds that homosexuality is "icky" , wrong" and "weird", and THEN go looking in the Bible for quotes that they can take out of context to justify their prejudice. And then they use all of that to justify denying GLBT people equal CIVIL rights.

EDIT: Those who claim its wrong because "if everyone was gay the human race would die out in 100 years" are just not thinking. Its idiotic to believe that everyone on the planet would magically "turn gay" or stop having heterosexual sex if same-sex marriage were legalized in one U.S state or even across the United States, so what is the point of this argument? There aren't any more gay and bisexual people now than there ever were, its just that GLBT people are more free to come out and be open about who they really are, instead of staying closeted and pretending to be straight. And with 6 billion-plus people on the planet, I SERIOUSLY doubt that the human species is in any danger of extinction, even if every gay and lesbian person on the planet were to come out. There would still be several billion heterosexuals to breed the next generations.

EDIT #2 -- and those who claim homosexuality is "against nature" need to do some reading on biology. Homosexual or bisexual behavior has been observed and reported by biologists in hundreds of animal and bird species around the globe, so clearly it IS "natural".

EDIT #3 -- Those who claim that same-sex marriage is wrong because "marriage is only between a man and a woman" are conveniently forgetting that up until 1967, marriage between people of different races was also considered "wrong" by many people. We don't define marriage that way anymore, thanks to the Supreme Court decision, "Loving vs Virginia", in which marriage was defined as a "fundamental human right".

Used to be that when a woman married, she gave up all legal rights to whatever property she owned or income she earned to her husband. Even her own children didn't belong to her, they belonged to their father. We don't define marriage that way anymore either.

Marriage for love is a relatively recent innovation; for most of human history, only the poorest of the poor could afford to marry for love since they had no property to pass on to their children anyway. For most people, marriage was strictly a business arrangement based on establishing family connections and advantageous property arrangements and love had nothing to do with it. For the most part, we don't define marriage that way anymore either.

I could go on with these examples. My point is that far from being an institution of eternal values that never change -- marriage has ALWAYS been changing and evolving over the years, and anybody who thinks differently needs to go read up on their history.

  • it is against the law of nature

  • I can't think of any valid or rational reason why people would be against gay and lesbian marriages. If they are, it might have to do with their (conservative) religious persuasion or something.

  • cuz in the bible it says something about only man and woman and blah blah blah.. who cares.. there is nothin wrong with it and people should be able to marry whoever they please.

  • I dont really care.. if they love eachother enough they should be allowed to get married.. But I do find it odd finding 2 men married or 2 woman married.. Maybe having 2 parents of the same sex.. I guess u wouldnt know any better.

  • I'm totally pro BL so~

all the stuff i can think about is arguable, like they get HIV and ADIS but straight people started it; religiously they are not god-lly but i'm not christian and non-christian people gets married too so...
whatever, gay guys are fun, if i'm a guy i would total be gay~ (duh..~)

  • it goes against life. if everyone in the world was gay then in around 100 years the world would be wiped out. and recently there is a lot more bi people poping up. its almost become a fad witch is wrong.

  • Because if we allow marriage to take place on a "whatever" basis, what is to stop a man from marrying two other women, or two other men? Why not a family member?

If the only qualification that we have for marriage is that its okay because people feel like doing it, then what would stop polygamy from eventually being legal? Nothing.

You also have to remember that if gay marriage is ruled a constitutional right, then any minister who refuses to perform a marriage ceremony is violating a "constitutional right" and they can get in serious legal trouble.

If the government doesn't have any business telling people who can't get married, then what business does the government have telling a minister who he can't refuse to marry?

  • omg! i was just having this conversation with my mom in the car earlier today!!!! okay, so since my family's catholic, we go to mass every sunday. and so on sunday in church, the preist starts talking about how GAY MARRIAGE IS WRONG and NOBODY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HAVE AN ABORTION! so today i asked my mom like, what the hell is their problem with gay marriage??? and pretty much her reasoning wasss that: catholics aren't against GAYS they're just against the whole actual ceremony of marriage because when it was written, it was meant to be recognized by God as a union between a man and woman in GOD'S eyes. so sinceee a gay marriage doesn't apply to this original statement, they feel that like. gays are jacking the marriage ceremony and insulting God by using the marriage ceremony. so they don't care if they're together or anything, they just don't want them to try and reinforce their bond by the ceremony of MARRIAGE. if you ask me, this is a pretty weak arguement. i mean, personally i don't support gay marriage, but honestly; IT'S NOT ANY OF MY BUISNESS! it's a personal thing between two people, a right, and i don't believe that anybody has a right to take that away from them wether it be a church or government. it's not like everybody in the world is catholic, so you can't try to force your ideas onto everybody else because each religon or belief has it's own morals and stuff. same with abortion; when it all boils down, it's the MOTHER'S choice! nobody has the right to make the decison for her, the same way nobody should have the right to tell gay people that they're "not worthy" of marriage. kay, i'm done ranting now.[:

  • It goes against nature.

Love, as is stated by many, many psychologists(too tired to find any specific examples) is deeply rooted to sex, specificalyl pro-creation. Love, without the natural ability to produce children through the classic penis-in-the-vag way, is not natural, so people are often naturally repulsed

  • Because it clearly states in the bible it is a sin so it is a religious thing. Also humans were made to love a man and woman. Marriage is something special between a man and a woman i think gays should also have the benefits just shouldn't be "marriage'.

  • im totally not agaisnt it. people should love who ever they want. but other people i know say its against gods law. or its unnatural.

but im athiest so i dont give a damn

  • I am against gay marriage, mainly for religious reasons...but I do not think that is why the government wants to ban it....they don't want a picture of the village people in the dictionary next to america. I also think if gay people want to get married the so be it! it's up to them! I think the government is to controlling when it comes to gays just because they don't agree with it...do you think they will pass a law saying no one can chew there food with there mouth open...NO!!! so leave the gays alone!

  • It's not :)

    I think it's funny there's a person singlehandingly downvoting everybody! Come on, give us YOUR opinion! :;
