Xbox 360 HD DVD drive to the original Xbox?

January 7, 2009 - 6:01 am
  • I have an original xbox that happens to have usb ports on it. :)

Will the HD-DVD drive work on the origional xbox and be supported by XBMC?

If so, what is the procedure (drivers,, mods, etc.)?

I have the drive working on a Vista PC, but when I connect it the the xbox, Im not sure how to play from it, and wasn't sure what I needed to get it to work on the xbox, if it will at all.

    TIA

    SeanHobbs

  • if he has it working on vista, couldnt he set up a upnp share thru wmp and then stream the HD content to the xbox?

  • but seanhobbs was definitly asking about connecting it to the Xbox directly via USB and that is what I was answering to

I guess after re-reading it thru your eyes I could see it that way, :D But I was offering an alternative work-around maybe lol Ok actually I missed the first line or had forgot about it by the time i was reading about the Vista PC, My bad.

  • Nevertheless, a USB DVD-ROM drive will never be supported in XBMC for the Xbox. Note that the Xbox hardware do not have USB 2.0 but only support USB 1.1 which in real-life practical use has a bandwidth of 1.5MB/second (and while that is enough for JPG pictures, MP3 music, and most DivX/XviD videos, it is not enough bandwidth for DVD-Video, so you can forget about high-definition video like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD which can have a bandwidth up to 80MB/second).

Well, I dont know how the HD DVD drive is connected to a vista PC, but It I wasnt talking about connecting it to the xbox directcly, it could be connected to the pc via IDE, and then the bottle neck would be the 100 mbs LAN, probably still too low for HD content, but it would be better than the 1.1 USB.

  • haha

PS! Ever heard of DRM (Digital rights management) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management)?, most if not all material available on HD DVD discs are protected/encrypted with DRM?

  • if it has up to 80 mb/sec bandwidth it wouldn't even help to exchange the original drive assuming the HD-DVD addon contains a IDE drive, since it's probably IDE-33 and IDE-100+ would be needed then

  • no

He never mentioned he was trying to watch HD content, s'pose his original DVD drive doesnt read media anymore, and his computer on has a CDROM, wouldnt he still be able to watch regular DVD this way?

He never mentioned he was trying to watch HD content (we all just assumed), s'pose his original DVD drive doesnt read media anymore, and his computer only has a CDROM, wouldnt he still be able to watch regular DVD this way? And I thought the xbox would do HD content, albeit poorly.
